Losing it and Keeping it Off: Healthy Weight Loss

There are plenty of products and companies in the weight loss industry, because almost everyone at some point in their lives considers trying to lose weight.

In most cases, weight loss can have great health benefits. Losing weight can decrease the risk of a heart attack, stroke and it can lower blood pressure. Weight loss can also increase energy levels and improve sleeping patterns.

Weight loss has to be approached correctly, however. Fad diets, diet pills and other quick weight loss schemes usually aren't healthy and don't keep the weight off for long. The key to weight loss is developing a healthy plan that revolves around eating well and exercising regularly.

Set Your Goals

The first thing to do when trying to lose weight is to set realistic goals. How much weight do you want to lose? How quickly do you want to lose it? You want to make weight loss part of your every day life and make healthy choices when it comes to eating and physical activity.

Exercise

When setting your weight loss goals, exercise should be at the top of the list. Exercising and physical activity help burn calories and fat, and also helps gain muscle. The best way to exercise is to combine aerobic exercise with strength training.

For an aerobic workout, do something that you enjoy. Play a sport like basketball or racquetball, or take a jog through the woods. You can also purchase aerobic videos or take aerobic classes. Aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, as well as burns calories.

Strength training is meant to strengthen your muscles, bones and joints. Strength training can be practiced by activities such as lifting weights, doing squats and abdominal crunches.

Strength training can be done at a gym, or you can choose to exercise at home with your own weights.

Don't over-do your exercise plan. Only exercise what your body can physically handle, and be sure to drink plenty of water. The best way to achieve your weight loss goals is to exercise at least four times a week, and continue to exercise even after your weight loss goal is met. This will maintain your health as well as your weight.
